Organisers, Smithers Pira were proud to work with the following paper industry experts to put together a comprehensive and topical agenda for the 2019 edition of Specialty Papers Europe.
Kelly L. Helein has 27 years of experience in sales, marketing, and product development, working for specialty paper companies, converters, and manufacturers. A self-described highly motivated connector and collaborator, she has extensive experience in business development, driving innovation and growth while working with customers such as ConAgra, Nestlé, Kohler, Mondi, Johnson and Johnson, Becton Dickinson and Zeiss.
Passionate about product innovation and problem-solving, Kelly serves as Board President for the Paper Discover Center and the Paper International Hall of Fame. She is also on the advisory committee for Smithers Pira’s Sustain Pack Conference and Specialty Papers Europe.
When she isn’t on the hunt for new product discovery, Kelly can be found with her husband and three children, in Appleton, Wisconsin. Kelly Helein is currently Director of Business Innovation for Footprint.
A native of Georgia, Sarah graduated from Georgia State University with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She worked in sales, business development, and as a first grade teacher prior to joining the TAPPI team. Currently, Sarah serves as the leader of TAPPI’s Paper & Board, Coating & Graphic Arts, and PIMA Management Divisions.
Tobias Müller is in charge of the overall marketing of Zanders, the German manufacturer of high quality speciality papers and boards for labels, packaging and graphical applications. In 2017, his focus will be on creating a permanent positioning of Zanders in the national and international market.
Prior to this, Tobias was leading the strategy and online marketing units as a partner in the marketing agency, 'Ziegs Plus Müller'. Contact via LinkedIn is very welcome.
Janet Preston joined English China Clays Int. (now IMERYS Minerals) in 1985 and has worked in the areas of coatings research, in the area of paints, inks paper coating and in printing science.
Whilst working at Imerys Janet graduated from University of Plymouth with an honours degree in Applied Chemistry. She then gained a PhD in Chemistry with the Interface Analysis Centre, University of Bristol, where she studied ink and coated paper interactions. Janet has around 90 publications in this area. She is currently a senior scientist in the company’s Carbonate Group.
In 2007 Janet was appointed as an Adjunct Professor (Docent) at Abo Akademi University in Finland, in the Laboratory of paper coating and converting.

Aleksandar Todorovic is an industry marketer professional with experience in research, development and engineering, servicing global working environment. His goal is to bring value to customer by deploying state-of-the art and innovative products and technologies through different methodologies. Aleksandar’s expertise areas are paper and board making, paper machinery and wet-end chemistry processes and products. In his current role, Aleksandar drives the deployment of key technology initiatives by linking r&d, marketing, sales and customer interface. He provides on-site technical support and also works on marketing plans, trainings, presentations and external publications. Aleksandar holds a M.Sc (Eng.) degree from Aalto University, Finland, majoring in paper technology.
Martti Toivakka is currently a full professor and head of the Laboratory of Paper Coating and Converting at Åbo Akademi University, Finland (www.abo.fi/lpcc). He received his doctoral degree in chemical engineering in the area of paper chemistry in 1998. His research group is a member of the Academy of Finland appointed Center of Excellence for Functional Materials, which develops functional materials and demonstrates devices for printed intelligence. His research interests include novel coating and surface treatment methods for natural fiber-based products, printing as a fabrication method and use of paper as a substrate for printed electronics. He has (co-)authored over 140 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is currently the guest editor of Chemical Engineering and Processing – special issue of Coating and Drying of Thin Films. He has organized and been the chairman of 2006 TAPPI Advanced Coating Fundamentals Symposium and the 2011 European Coating Symposium, both held in Turku, Finland. Furthermore, he has arranged numerous international short courses for industrial professionals and doctoral level students, the recent ones being Coating and Drying of Thin Films – Fundamentals & Applications with a Special Topic on Printed and Organic Electronics in 2011, Pigment Coating Technology in 2012, and Advanced Printing Technology in 2014.
Alexey Vishtal works in Nestlé Research Centre where he focuses on development and implementation of innovative fibre-based packaging solutions. Alexey has a doctoral degree from Tampere University of Technology (Finland) in the field of papermaking and paper converting. He also has industrial experience in pulp and paper and chemical industries.
