Exclusive Interview with Giacomo Canali of Barilla

Q. Your presentation will discuss “the approach of a brand owner towards sustainability in packaging, also passing through the use of specialty papers,” can you give us a sneak peak of what delegates will hear?

The presentation will show how a brand owner with different markets and categories approaches sustainability in its processes of designing packaging. With great attention to recyclable materials so far, and in the future, there is a growing attention to the renewability of sources.

Q. The brand owner has two responsibilities:

One indirect, giving consumer’s only materials that can be recycled in an effective way.
One direct, only choosing materials that have the lowest impact on the environment.

Q. Why do you think it is important to have a discussion on this topic at Specialty Papers Europe?

It’s the right place to show our roadmap towards a sustainable future of packaging materials, and to share our goals with the entire supply chain.  Nobody can do this journey alone, and so we need innovation and commitment from all involved.

Q. What are some of the current trends that will be featured at the conference?

Enhance performances of paper-based materials, in order to let them become a concrete alternative to plastics, nowadays this is at the top of the list for consumers’ targets.

Q. What are you seeing as the biggest stumbling blocks in the specialty paper industry?

We must always keep an eye on the impact of paper-based materials during their whole lifecycle, and reduce, or better, remove, all the potential contaminants that could eventually be used during production.

Q. What are you most looking forward to hearing about at Specialty Papers Europe 2019?

As I said, I’d like to find innovative materials, more and more sustainable, and with enhanced performances, being able to solve any potential issue for our food products.

Q. Why do you feel it’s important for people to attend Specialty Papers Europe 2019?

It’s the best place to put together demand and offer, to understand the needs of the users and to find out which innovations are coming to the market.
