Dr. ir. Pieter Samyn graduated in 2001 at Ghent University (Belgium) and received Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering in 2007 from Ghent University presenting his research on polymer tribology. He followed an academic career from 2000 to 2020 at Universities of Ghent, Freiburg, Toronto and Hasselt having different positions of assistant professor and visiting professor. In 2021, he joined the collective research centre Sirris, a collective industrial research institute, as a Senior Researcher in Circular Economy and Renewable Materials. His work focusses on technical valorization of biomaterials as building blocks including binders and fillers for functional biocomposites and coatings. He led research projects on bio-inspired adhesion mechanisms, protective coatings for papers, nanocellulose production and application, biopolymer processing, advanced analytics and processing of nanocomposites. His work was awarded with several distinctions including the Robert-Bosch Juniorprofessorship, Baden-Wurttemberg Juniorprofessorenprogramm, Heinz-Maier Leibnitz Preis and FRIAS Fellowship. Currently, he assists companies in the implementation of bio-based polymer coatings and paints for industrial applications. In particular, he is involved in the development of bio-based coatings for control of barrier properties and recyclability of coated papers.

Dr Vinay Kumar is a Senior Scientist at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. He has been at VTT for almost four years. The main goal of his research work at VTT is to develop innovative solutions for improving the competitiveness of the forest products industry and sustainability for the world.
He has developed novel methods for large-scale processing of nanocellulose suspensions into coatings and films for various applications ranging from sustainable packaging to flexible electronics. In addition, he has expertise on various barrier and dispersion coating technologies for paper and board packaging applications.
He did is Doctoral and Master studies in Chemical Engineering from Åbo Akademi (Finland), and he holds a Bachelor of Technology degree from IIT Roorkee (India).

He has studied chemistry and mathematics at the universities of Tübingen and Mainz and finalized with a PhD in 1986 on photochemistry.
He has 11 years of industrial experience in the field of film and paper converting especially on wet chemical and vacuum technologies. After this he was responsible for R&D, technical support and quality safety in a lacquer producing company.
Since 2002 he works for the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging in Freising in the department of „materials development“, which deals with packaging materials, film extrusion, film and paper converting. The main field is permeation of gases and vapors. He coordinated several industrial and public funded projects on national and EU-level.
He is giving lectures at the University of Applied Sciences of Weihenstephan in Freising on “Filling and packaging technology”.

Dr. Sharon Koh-Fallet is a Lead Regulatory Review Scientist in the Division of Food Contact Substances (DFCS) in the Office of Food Additive Safety (OFAS) in the U.S. FDA. Dr. Koh-Fallet has worked on a variety of review work within DFCS ranging from premarket industry submissions to postmarket safety review projects. Dr. Koh-Fallet received her Bachelor of Science degree as a dual major in Chemistry and Physics from James Madison University in 2002. She received her doctorate in Chemistry from Northwestern University in 2007. Following the completion of her doctorate degree, Dr. Koh-Fallet worked at Milliken & Company for 6.5 years as a Research Chemist. Dr. Koh-Fallet then worked at the Naval Research Laboratory as a postdoctoral fellow, followed by a position as a staff scientist at Strategic Analysis, Inc. where she served as scientific and technical support to various government program managers. Dr. Koh-Fallet joined the FDA in January of 2017. Since 2019, Dr. Koh-Fallet serves as a team-lead in the regulatory review branch, where she continues to assist in managing premarket industry submissions, and other projects for both herself and her team.
Brought up in a family of printing and paper production and 15 years at H&M HQ marketing department working with innovation, building our supplier network, the startup of our sustainability work and wow with Point of sale material it was a complete match when I started to work with H&M group customer packaging 9 years ago. Taking our innovation and sustainability work within packaging for our stores and growing E-com sales to the next level, setting our packaging strategy and having the possibility of making sure we are leading the way to a more sustainable future is still my passion and the journey has just begun.

Jan Rops is Product Manager at Crown Van Gelder BV, a Dutch specialty paper mill situated near Amsterdam. He received a Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the Delft University of Technology, studied at QMU London and did a post-graduation project at the University of Barcelona. Jan has worked for Akzo Nobel, Saint Gobain Isover, Tetra Pak and Crown Van Gelder. In 2004 at Crown van Gelder he developed their first HSI inkjet paper. Since 2014 Jan re-joined Crown Van Gelder as product manager for Crown Letsgo High Speed Inkjet paper and he specialized in sustainable inkjet book printing. In 2019 he started his search for alternative paper fibers with low environmental foot print. In February 2021 Crown Van Gelder launched ‘Crown Native’, a strong, food safe, eco-friendly paper made with sugar beet fibers coming from the remaining at the end of the sugar production process. In 2022 more alternative paper fibers will be incorporated.
